5 Signs You Should Choose Removable Dental Plates Over Bridges or Crowns

A dental plate is a removable set of fake teeth that can replace missing teeth in your mouth. It exists in contrast to bridges and crowns which are both permanently affixed in your mouth. Wondering if you're a better candidate for a dental plate over a bridge or a crown? Here are five signs you should choose a dental plate.

1. You Are Missing Teeth

If you are missing one or several teeth, that automatically puts you in the category of needing a bridge or a dental plate. Crowns must be affixed onto your existing tooth structure. Basically with a crown, the dentist removes all of the decay and most of the surface area of the tooth. However, the root and the base of the tooth stays intact.

Then, a fake tooth, called a crown is made. That crown is fitted onto the remaining part of your tooth. If you don't have any tooth structure left, you can't consider a crown.

2. You Are Missing Several Teeth in the Same Arch

Dental plates typically include several teeth, but the teeth must be in the same arch or area of your mouth. If you have missing teeth spread throughout your mouth, you may want to look into a bridge instead. A bridge consists of one or more teeth that are permanently connected to the teeth on either side of them.

3. Your Teeth Aren't Strong Enough to Support a Bridge

If you're on the fence between a bridge and a plate, it all boils down to personal preference and the condition of your teeth around that area. In order for a bridge to work, the teeth that the bridge attaches to must be strong and in good health. If the dentist is worried that those teeth are particularly prone to decay or if they already have issues, he or she may recommend a dental plate instead.

In these cases, you may need to have a few teeth extracted in order for the dental plate to fit. However, there's no need to worry about the impact on your smile. Dental plates are made with pink gums that match your existing gums, and the teeth are shaped to look natural. When the plate is in, no one should even be able to tell that you have one. In fact, many people with dentures and dental plates report that people don't notice them.

4. You Want to Be Able to Clean the Teeth Easily

With dental plates, you remove them at the end of every day, and cleaning is simple. You can brush the plate by hand, but you can also soak it overnight to remove any remaining debris.

If you have arthritis or issues with hand dexterity, it can be hard to brush permanent bridges, especially if they are in the back of your mouth. With removable dental plates,on the other hand, it tends to be easier because you can move the plates into whatever angles and positions work for you.

5. You Want the Flexibility of Removable Plates

In other cases, you may simply prefer removable dental plates. If you have been missing teeth for a while, you may be used to the feeling of your mouth. You may prefer to have teeth when you need them for chewing or taking a photo, but you may want to take them out when you're sleeping or relaxing. Plates allow for that sort of flexibility, and they can match your lifestyle.

About Me

Dealing with Dental Braces

Yo! My name is Sarah. I live in Syndey, Australia. A couple of years ago, I was fitted with dental braces. I was 21 years old at the time and I hated the idea of wearing braces. However, my dentist was really good at explaining why it was a good idea to have the treatment. It felt a little strange at first but as time went by, I got used to wearing my braces. On follow-up visits, my dentist would check that I had been properly cleaning and caring for my braces. I decided to start this blog to offer advice to other brace wearers.
